Fans of the series and fans of the entire cyberpunk-survival-horror genre can take solace in the fact that there are going to be three differentSystem Shockgames up-for-grabs in the near future. BesidesSystem Shock 2: Enhanced Edition,System Shock 3, a direct sequel to the second game, is alsounder development according to the veteran game designer Warren Specter. Plus,System Shock: Enhanced Editionis still in active development and is currently aiming for an early 2020 release date.

So far the studio hasn’t offered any extra information regardingSystem Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. It’s safe to assume that the game will offer polished visuals, higher resolution, and other improvements in the visual/audio department. The enhanced version of the originalSystem Shockoffered support for 4K resolution, mod support, variety of bug fixes, remappable controls, and other minor improvements, so it’s safe to assume thatSystem Shock 2: Enhanced Editionwill receive similar treatment as well.

The Enhanced Edition will also be ported to Nightdive Studios very own KEX engine. Fortunately, the original version ofSystem Shock 2, which is available via GoG and Steam, will remain online and it will also receive community updates as usual. Only time will tell if the Enhanced version ofSystem Shock 2is a precursor to a full remake or not, similarly to how Nightdive releasedSystem Shock: Enhanced Editionahead of that game’s still-in-development remake.

System Shock 2: Enhanced Editionwill release for PC, but currently has no release date.
