In a string of leaks and rumors surroundingDestiny 2, the latest is pointing toward a possible release of the game on Nintendo Switch. While earlier reports aboutBungie’s sci-fi shooter coming to Google Stadiaseem to be pretty well substantiated and likely to be confirmed (although it’s safe to wait until an official confirmation from Bungie and Google to be sure), this latest alleged leak about a Switch version of the game should be taken with a bigger grain of salt.
The rumor comes from a picture posted online allegedly of the box forDestiny 2Forsaken: Legendary Collection. The available platforms are listed at the bottom of the box, which shows Xbox One, PC, and Switch. It is entirely possible that this could be a fake picture that has been created or doctored by someone online, with many online being quick to call it out as just that. It is also possible that it could be a misprint on a legitimate game box.
It is a little hard to believe thatDestiny 2could run on Nintendo Switch, what with the console being significantly less powerful than the Xbox One and PS4. However, other developers have ported their games over to the Switch by making various technical sacrifices, so it is not outside the realm of possibility that the same could be done withDestiny 2.
The other factor working against the legitimacy of this rumor is that with Bungie’s split from Activision as its publishing partner, the developer also lost the help of several other Activision studios that were assisting with creating content forDestiny 2. Bungie only has so many resources on its own, and considering that the developer looks to bereleasing a full-fledged expansion called Shadowkeepthis fall, it will be impressive if Bungie also has the development power to port over the game to entirely new console.
But if the Switch version ofDestiny 2is real, the announcement would likely come soon possibly as part ofBungie’s reveal stream about the next chapter ofDestiny 2on June 6 or during Nintendo’s E3 2019 Nintendo Direct on June 11.
Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
