James Middleton— and his beloved dogs — are discovering the exhausting parts of parenthood.

James and his wife,Alizee, welcomed their son,Inigo, last year, but were already the proud parents to six dogs: Mabel, Zulu, Inka, Luna, Nala and Isla. Before Inigo’s arrival, James shared how he was preparing the pup pack for the new arrival onGood Morning Britain.

However, Inigo never got to meet Ella, James' cocker spaniel whodied in early 2023. Ella was the first dog James owned in adulthood, and he previously credited the pet with helping him during his battle with depression.

James even says Ella played a big part in introducing him to his wife. In a 2019 essay forThe Telegraph,he revealed that he met Alizee at the South Kensington Club in Chelsea after his cocker spaniel “made a beeline” for the French financial analyst. Mistaking James for a server, Alizee ordered a drink…and the couple went on to marry in 2021.

In an Instagram post announcing Inigo had joined the family, James wrote, “We have settled into our new life as parents and I’ve told him all about Ella and that if it wasn’t for her he wouldn’t be here today and that we miss her greatly. The dogs have been fantastic at welcoming their little brother into the pack (although Inka needs to know the teddybears are not all for her…).”

The Princess of Wales' sibling recently revealed that he’s written a memoir,Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, which will be published on Sept. 26.

“Now, as many of you know, I credit Ella to saving my life when I was eclipsed with clinical depression, and she passed away just over a year ago. I was heartbroken…we were inseparable for 15 years. So I decided to share her journey through this book,” James explained in anInstagramvideo, where he proudly held up the first manuscript.

“I know many of you have your own Ellas or might be in need of one. I hope this book will also help us to talk more openly about our mental health, our need for connection and the way in which the animals that we think we are taking care of are actually looking after us in return,” he continued.
