At least 145 pilot whales are dead following a mass stranding at a remote beach in southerly New Zealand . The two pods of cowcatcher whale beached themselves over the weekend , their carcasses now littering the picturesque beach .
The two pods stranded themselves about 1.2 miles ( 2 klick ) asunder on Stewart Island late Saturday , accordingto the New Zealand Department of Conservation ( DOC ) . The grim scene was discovered by a tramp , who trek to a nearby field base to report the stranding .
By the clock time conservationists get in on the scene , 75 whales — close to half the full number — were already dead . Due to the compromise wellness of those still live , and the remote location of the beach , the environmentalist adjudicate to film the stay on whales as a final enactment of mercy .

“ lamentably , the likelihood of being able to successfully re - float the stay whales was super low . The remote placement , lack of nearby personnel , and the hulk ’ devolve term intend the most humane matter to do was to euthanize , ” say DOC Rakiura Operations Manager Ren Leppens in a statement . “ However , it ’s always a grievous decision to make . ”
The incident happened at the southerly end of Mason Bay on Stewart Island , also known as Rakiura . Mason ’s Bay is located 22 miles ( 35 kilometers ) from the island ’s master township of Oban . The island is home to about 375 multitude , which is locate off the southern shore of New Zealand ’s large southern island .
The DOC has get hold of the local autochthonous universe to discuss next step , but the carcass may be left on the beach for nature take its course , the APreports . The DOC surmise that the whales were beach for an intact day prior to being detected , as some whale were half - buried in sand , and with so many already dead .

“ You feel for the animals , it ’s just a really sad consequence , ” tally Leppens . “ It ’s the kind of affair you do n’t want to see . You bid you could see the reasoning why the whale run aground comfortably , so you could intervene . ”
New Zealand is infamous for whale strandings . On February 10 , 2017 , for example,416 pilot film whales beach themselves at Farewell Spit in Golden Bay — the high-risk mass stranding the country had see in decades . commonly , anywhere from between 85 to 300 whales and dolphins strand themselves on a New Zealand beach each twelvemonth .
Pilot whale , whose seedpod members are connected by intense societal bonds , are particularly vulnerable to mass strandings . It ’s potential these whales get perplex when coming to the assistance of an onetime , sick , or injured pod member . The strandings might also have something to do with the pilot whale ’s navigation system ; their echolocation becomes compromised in shallow , mildly splosh waters .

By sheer coincidence , New Zealand conservationists are currently having to deal with an unrelated stranding to the Second Earl of Guilford . As the DOC reports , 10 pygmy giant are stuck on 90 Miles Beach , two of which have been refloated . Further set about to redeem these whales will be made tomorrow .
