Top Gun: Maverickdoesn’t have a sequel announced, but its cast is already preparing to get into shape for another film in the franchise. At least, that’s according to Danny Ramirez, who says he’s getting physically ready to return to his role as Lt. Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia.
Top Gun: Maverickwas a bona fide hit in 2022. It wasone of the biggest box office hits of 2022. While it took 36 years for the sequel toTop Gunto hit theaters, a sequel toTop Gun: Mavericklikely won’t take quite as much time if it’s greenlit. And given its overall gross, a sequel isn’t out of the question.

During the Golden Globes,Varietyasked Ramirez when theTop Gun: Mavericksequel would begin shooting. “I’m gonna start training for it yesterday,” Ramirez responded. “Yeah, I’m already. I’m trying to get even more shredded than the first one. ‘Cause, you know, the competition gets elevated every time. […] There’s a lot of abs to be gained. Let’s just say that, you know?”
TheTop Gunseries is famous for its fanservice. In response to the film’s success, Paramount even released athree-hour version of theTop Gun: Maverickbeach scene. That scene featured plenty of topless men, each of whom was in good shape. Ramirez is likely anticipating a repeat of this kind of fanservice.
Top Gun: Maverickwas only brought down byAvatar 2and its titanic success. The Tom Cruise film was nearly unstoppable during its theatrical run and made a killing for Paramount. That means a sequel is almost certain if there’s a story for it. Of course, the studio may choose not to make a sequel for whatever reason, but in today’s cinematic landscape, sequels are never far behind successful films.
When the originalTop Guncame out, it was also a huge success, but sequels weren’t necessarily on the minds of most executives. That’s probably whyMavericktook so long to make. It’s a different world now, though, andTop Gun: Maverickis breaking streaming records on Paramount Plus, another new factor that plays heavily into the potential for a sequel.
