The plot of writer - managing director Isaiah Saxon’sThe Legend of Ochimay feel intimate — it ’s a come - of - age tale about a lone tween who befriend a forbidden monster , very much in the vena ofE.T. the Extraterrestrial — but it ’s executed with such earnest creativeness that ’s well-heeled to forgive . Focus on the globe - construction and you wo n’t mind that you ’ve ascertain interchangeable tales before ; the monsters are play by stunningly expressivepuppets , and the setting manages to balance instinctive sweetheart with a gritty realism that keep both the story and its emotion sense grounded .
That latter point is no modest exploit , considering the go - to production design for fancy tales tends to require a mickle of gratuitous CG . There ’s certainly some CG afoot inThe Legend of Ochi , but it takes a back butt to real locations , mostly in Romania , to bring its woods - laden environs to the blind . On a small island that clingstone to onetime - humanity traditions — but has n’t stopped the marching music of progress when it comes to things like cars and heavy metal — a girl named Yuri ( Helena Zengel ) tell apart us about the “ ochi , ” the much - dread animal that live in the mountains near her settlement .
“ They destroyed my family , ” she explains , but it does n’t take long forThe Legend of Ochito reveal that she means the ochi , in some direction , caused her parents ( Dad is Willem Dafoe , Mom is Emily Watson ) to split up . Also in the mix is her embrace comrade Petro , who ’s played byStranger thing ‘ Finn Wolfhard — a fact that might make you expect him to play a much bigger office than he actually does .

Dafoe gets in some scene - chewing as a man haunt with hunt and killing all the ochi , but he ’s not as vicious as that might imply . His “ army ” consists of local boys he ’s drilled in fighting , and his biggest failing is that he ’s so focussed on destruction that he ca n’t see how wretched Yuri is . Nor can he get the picture the notion that mankind and ochi might be equal to of peacefully co - be .
Yuri ’s estranged mum has a more tolerant panorama of the creatures , despite having lost her hand after being bitten by one . And she has an impressively academic understanding of the ochi , specially in regards to the Lionel Trilling , singing vocalizations that make up their nomenclature . But like many stories of this character , the only item of aspect that really weigh is Yuri ’s , peculiarly after she encounters an injured babe ochi that ’s become separated from its kin . Though she was raised by a Fatherhood with a “ shoot first ” mentality , Yuri — who has a deep empathy for the raw reality — knows what she must do : help the creature find its way home .
ThoughThe Legend of Ochireveals the ochi early on , it ’s not until we drop time with the baby that we see how special they are . That ’s due in no small part to the marionette itself , which evokes not just a much cuter E.T. but also Gizmo fromGremlins . There ’s an almost Studio Ghibli gather Wes Anderson vibe as the two newfangled besties Julian Bond . Yuri calms the beast by popping in a pair of fake Fang that depend not unlike its own very sharp teeth , leaves a note for her father with a cheeky P.S. ( “ I am impregnable and cool and do n’t consider what you say about anything ” ) , set on her touch icteric parka , and hits the road with the region ’s most venerate giant riding in her rucksack , Yoda - manner .

There are instant of drollery along the way — of row Dafoe ’s character has an entire set of armor to wear while he and his mini - militia Salmon P. Chase after Yuri — butThe Legend of Ochiis mostly interested with the growing connexion between Yuri and the beast . She ’s its only protector in a man she understands firsthand can be vicious and unfeeling , and their journey becomes more about Yuri ’s coming of age , giving her the strength to stand up to her father when that time inevitably comes .
But , again — even if you could see very clearly whereThe Legend of Ochiis pass you , the pleasure derived from getting there can not be overstated . If by its end you do n’t sense wonder and hope ( and maybe shed a tear or two ) over the film ’s in earnest expressed lesson about understanding , compromise , and larn to experience in harmony , you might need to adjust your own spirit level of cynicism . And if the baby ochi puppet does n’t give you extreme cute aggression , you might want to ensure your impulse .
