get through to viewSynecdoche , New York , the belated film from Charlie “ Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ” Kaufman , creates its own firebrand of magical realism span with skill fiction . The tale of a theater director with a grotesque disease directing a playing period that never stop , Synecdoche , New York is a speculation on relationship — and time travel . Kaufman has played with our sense of reality in his picture before , let us climb up into a fame ’s brain with Being John Malkovich for example . But Synecdoche is a place where a household can be casually on ardor for thirty year without that seeming out of the average . Petals can shine from tattooed flowers . debauched - forwarding through time shortly comes to feel like the norm alternatively of something unusual . This is unfeignedly scifi as art — or perchance prowess as scifi . But is that good ? Spoilers ahead . No one shape in photographic film today has perfected the artistry of the trippy , mind - bending script quite like screenwriter Kaufman . As a screenwriter , he examine that it was potential for a author to truly make a movie his own , and to achieve a level of ill fame for writing rare in Hollywood . But it is almost impossible to survey Synecdoche , New York , the previous effort from Kaufman ’s fevered brain , since the film does n’t suffer by any movie rules I know . This time Kaufman the writer also stepped into the role of conductor , and the result , while defying every pattern you ’ve ever hear of , ultimately runs on in sore need of an editor . But even this could be an intentional effect — because everything is speculative in the strange , half - scifi macrocosm of Synecdoche . The story starts out terrestrially enough , introduce us to Phillip Seymour Hoffman ’s Caden Cotard ( Kaufman bang his quirky name ) and his strained family life . Caden is a theater director in a small , upstate New York town , about to launch a new production of Death of a Salesman . He ’s marital to a destitute - mettlesome , thwarted creative person , Adele Lack ( Catherine Keener ) , and they have a precocious young daughter , Olive . It soon becomes clear that Caden is suffering from a liveliness - lowering , mysterious illness , with doctors urge that he see a brain doctor . The affliction is manifest as a sort of light-colored - hearted grotesque — vehemence on toilet bodily fluid , protrude pustule and uncontrollable body gyration bristle . With his man and wife to Adele barely usable and his future unsealed , Caden flirt forlornly with buxom box seat - billet daughter Hazel ( Samantha Morton , with a lot more tomentum than she had in Minority Report ) .
This seems to set the stage for a tale about relationship and life story crisis , all done up in what Kaufman is really best at : the art of making awkward dialog poignant , handwriting saturate in quibbling exchanges made brilliant in their truth . But everything function haywire after Adele elects to take Olive to Berlin — that ’s when Caden ’s reality , and the audience ’s , begin to come undone . Before long , the movie , which had already shown hints of its surrealism under the open , jumps any recognisable genre . We all commence receive time dilation and strange skips ; the world seems to progress around Caden without his knowledge , and he ’s our anchorman in it . Caden , still nauseous , but still not bushed , is finally spurred to action mechanism when he receives a MacArthur genius grant , and decides to mount an epical production that will be “ heavy , and true , and tough . ” This occur to be in a massive warehouse in the affection of New York City , feature a cast of thousands , though they have no hand yet . That ’s when things get really weird . There are many elements to Synecdoche that are cleanly execute : its part portrait and their dialogue ; the inventive and reminiscent set and painstakingly choose backdrop . There are dingy infirmary corridors like something from a horror picture show , and scaled - down replicas of New York City within more reproduction . The dress always fit the characters just so , and the faces are well framed . No one can blame Kaufman ’s fine aid to detail or how to the full he ’s realize an suppose , substitute world . you may see that it must have all gorgeously made good sense in his head . While the film breaks young reason in terms of narrative free - fall and unembarrassed rarity , it must be fence that everything is postulate a bit too far . Kaufman ’s ideas and themes are unerringly interesting , and the moving-picture show wants to be progress to important , existential assertion , but there are too many of them . run at just over 2 hours , Synecdoche suffer from its length and too many curveballs . We ’re along for the twisting ride , and mostly game . But after so much stern bizarreness , it ’s hard not to want your foot back on solid ground .
I wanted to love this picture show the means I ’ve loved Kaufman ’s other creations , particularly Eternal Sunshine . But Synecdoche could have been trimmed to a far more toothsome shape that would have better showcased its flaky sensitivity and made its biggest themes bolder . It ’s to Kaufman ’s credit as a storyteller that we are invested in these unknown , often unlovable hoi polloi at all . “ Speculative ” may be the best way to describe what ’s sound on , sometimes tipping into even more plain realm of science fabrication . There ’s certainly many ideas that toy with it , like Caden trying to aim his ailing body with bio - feedback and the threatening zeppelins that police the night sky in his futurity . The normal rules that order time and space are askew , and people always encounter the extraordinary alongside on the regular . While Caden ’s staged drama progresses , sweep years and gain a life of its own , the “ real ” New York world seems to be experiencing an increasingly violent , encroaching , unexplained war . Kaufman has his part stroll through shooting and holler and fail unperceived upon , still caught up in their domestic affairs . Synecdoche sports a cast of exceptional actors , many of whom must age decades in the moving-picture show ’s flexible timeline . Phillip Seymour Hoffman is in almost every conniption , and inhabit Caden with a sullen void so exact it ’s hard to imagine anyone else in the character . British actress Samantha Morton and Emily Watson play doppelgangers of the same part to large issue . Their Hazel has all the trappings of a Kaufmanesque heroine , down to the red hair , colorful wearing apparel and ever - present quirkiness . Hope Davis has a small part as an eccentric healer , and Dianne Wiest another as an actress turned director . Michelle Williams is so good as an ingenue who catches Caden ’s optic that I am force to recant Dawson ’s Creek gag forever . But own all the caparison of a brilliant film does not mean that they come together to form one . The various threads and subplots peril to collapse under their own weight as fiction becomes meta fiction becomes meta fabrication becomes meta fable . By the metre Caden is place a full - scale replica of his own life , dwarf by actors who get to experience their roles better than the originals , the lookup for a cohesive narrative or the emotional payback we usually look from a film is off . We are keep back in our backside by the desire to see what could possibly bechance next , growing cautious as Kaufman evidence no qualm about killing off important characters . Death is , in fact , the main theme underlie Synecdoche , always hulk larger than the challenges of life sentence . Love is want and incessantly pursued , but portrayed as ultimately momentary and tragical . “ Everyone , ” the characters say more than once to each other , “ is disappointing . ” While the newsprint advertizement triumph about this all being screaming , I have to say that this was one of the most relentlessly depressing movies I ’ve ever seen . You will laugh many fourth dimension , but it will mostly be awkward . By the time Kaufman call in a mod deus ex machina , I was quick for this recollective strange head trip through psychological and English and play theory to end . But Synecdoche will have as many warm fan as it will befuddled looker call in horseshit . It ’s easy to see that Kaufman is trying to make deep investigations into the human psyche : the themes of life , death , war , family and wild-eyed love are writ large and sometimes literally preached at us or have a special monologue . But the picture is impaired by how much of a detached sovereignty its author - manager has been give — his hands are in too many pots . Its run clock time could be almost halved and still maintain the parts that are the most affectional and revelatory . See Synecdoche , New York if you make love Charlie Kaufman ’s rare worlds , if you have a doting penchant for the bizarre , and the willingness to give up all narrative bearings . See it especially if you enjoy unendingly chew over on the nature of universe . Just do n’t see it with your friend who have short aid spans , or anyone not keen on all that ’s meta and much too self - aware .
