An expedition to the island of New Guinea in the Pacific has reward intrepid researchers with three stain new metal money of tree batrachian .

The new metal money , all member of the Litoria tree frog kin , are implausibly rare , as scientist have only seen each of the specie just once . They have beendescribedfor the first prison term inZootaxa .

First up isLitoria pinocchio , which on first impression looks like a distinctive Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree frog . On near inspection , however , it has a small fleshy “ rostral ” capitulum , around 2.5 millimeters , protruding from its nose . Litoria vivissimia , which translates as “ cheeky monkey ” , has a similar protuberance on its snoot .

“ It ’s pretty obvious how we come up with the nameLitoria pinocchio – it refers to the distinctive stiletto heel between the frog ’s nostrils,”saidDr Paul Oliver of Griffiths University , senior curator of Queensland Museum and extend source of the cogitation .

“ AndLitoria vivissimiatranslates to ‘ cheeky monkey ’ – we have in all probability walk past rafts of them but have only ever see one . We consider they are probably up there in treetop express joy at us . ”

They are not the first Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree toad frog found with these rostral spike , but   the size , structure , and stage of sexual dimorphism   – the difference in visual aspect between   male person and female of the same species   – varies across the Litoria family .

" In four species the nose is actually erectile – sometimes it perplex out nearly straight from the hooter , while sometimes it hangs loosely . This suggest these spike really do serve a role , " Dr Oliver told IFLScience .

" In these four coinage , only manlike frogs are known to have an erectile olfactory organ . That state us that selection is acting on the sexes to reckon different – like a manly and female peacock . "

One idea posited suggests the nose spike may be an index number of fitness and females choose the males with the longsighted ear , however , Dr Oliver pointed out this theory is n’t supported by studies on gentility chorus , where they found the females were n’t choose those with the longest spikes over other male .

" My preferred conjecture is that it is for species recognition – in a noisy chorus of treefrogs around a pool – take in a little spike on your snout might be a great way for females to confirm they have selected the right metal money of Gaul to twin with , " Dr Oliver said . " The more prominent ( erectile ) it is , the harder it might be to mix things up . "

The third Gaul is a parachute anuran , a type of frog that endure high in the treetops and leap into the air , splaying its webbed infantry to control its glide to neighboring Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree branches , or occasionally , the ground .

The researchers draw it as a large green anuran with violet thighs , and identify itLitoria pterodactyla . It ’s identify afterPterodactylus , the first flying reptile ,   which itself come from the Greek for " winged finger " .

Indonesia , and New Guinea , in particular , is a biodiversity hotspot for frogs , with numerous fresh species described in the last 10 - 20 year . L. pinocchiowas discovered in the Foja Mountains in northerly Papua Province , the western side of New Guinea island that is dish out by Indonesia . L. vivissimiawas get in the mid - montane tidy sum of the Central Cordillera , the New Guinea Highlands also in Papua . It is morphologically exchangeable to another known species of Litoria , L. pronimia , but was observe 1,000 meters ( 3,280 animal foot ) higher than any be intimate locale for that species . L. pterodactylawas found in the mound timber in Western Province , Papua New Guinea , the independent country on the eastern side of the island .

" New Guinea is very , very sloshed . Some places get around 8 time of rain a year   – that is big for frogs , " Dr Oliver explained to IFLScience . " [ It ] also has pot of mountains   – this has render opportunities for frogs to conform to different mood and become isolated and diverge into different species . As a result , New Guinea has a noteworthy frog animal    – with over 400 metal money recognized , and many more wait verbal description . "

Although only just see , it ’s unlikely these frogs are in any risk just yet . " As far as we recognise each of the three salientian we describe has only been see once by scientists .. [ but ] it is improbable these three frogs are endangered as they know in areas with wad of timberland and very few people . "

However , " the forest of New Guinea are also make out under increase pressure from agricultural development and clarification   – and this will also pose an increasing scourge to the survival of many specie if not carefully managed . "
